Weekend News Bits

June 5, 2004

newsI noticed an interesting article over at Engadget about the July 1st FCC mandate that all sets 36 “and larger sold be “Digital Cable Ready”.

Also the release of the Infocus 4805 has rumored to have been pushed back another week to two weeks, but it still should be out by the end of June.

In theory, on July 1st customers should be able to request from their cable companies smartcards (much like the ones that are inserted into DirecTV boxes) that work in any cable box or digital television that is compatible with the new standard. Customers will be able to use that card with the equipment of their choosing. No longer will consumers be forced to use the anemic (and proprietary) cable boxes provided to them by their cable companies.
