Voom acquires additional satellite spectrum licenses

July 18, 2004

voomVoom has won their bid for two new satellite slots from the FCC last week, furthering their ability to deliver HDTV programming to subscribers. The bids totaling $6.4 million can only help to establish Voom as a serious contender in the hi-definition broadcast arena.

A total of 64 unassigned channels were acquired with half at 175 degrees and the remainder at 166 degrees. The speculation is that the two satellite feeds would be “split” between the east coast and west coast, (or similar re-distribution) as neither feed in of itself would be able to cover both coasts at once, for the majority of subscribers. But even if this is the case, we’re potentially looking at 32 new satellite channel slots (possibly more with the slated implementation of WM9 codec’s) regardless of where the subscribers reside in the continental US.
