Gefen 2×1 HDTV Switcher, review

Gefen-dvi-switcherThis might be one of the shortest reviews I’ll ever do, no no hold the applause… The Gefen 2×1 HDTV Switcher is just that, a two in one out DVI switch, with a infrared remote control. The supplied remote has two discrete codes for input selection, as InFocus decided I only needed one DVI input, and I have two DVI devices, this was just the ticket. In all honesty this thing couldn’t be simpler to set up and use. I unpacked it, attached the supplied DVI cables to my Voom box and DVD player, attached the output to my projector and presto, I had the ability to switch between the DVI sources.

One thing I was concerned about was the HDCP (handshaking) no worries there, it synced up and was ready to go instantly. After learning the codes into my universal remote, it was as seamless as could be. I did notice one tiny issue, the switcher apparently is somewhat heat sensitive, with it on top of my Voom box, it got a little hot, and it seemed sluggish responding to the remote codes, after moving it away and letting it cool down, it was back to normal. With DVI becoming more and more of a necessity this little baby really comes in handy, for those of us with more devices than inputs. Gefen even makes a HDMI version. So if your setup lacks enough DVI inputs to get the job done, this device is highly recommended.
