Diamonds are a Nanotubes best friend?

January 19, 2005

diamondI have to say this one came from the least expected technology room straight to my desk, without passing go. Samsung, Canon and Toshiba are apparently working on a new flat panel display technology, whose primary manufacturing components are diamonds (carbon nanotubes to be exact). The new displays known as “field effect displays” (FED’s) are said to be less expensive (must be using cubic zirconia’s) than traditional LCD’s and Plasma’s and offer even better images to boot.

The science behind the new displays is a hybrid of CRT and LCD televisions according to the article. Samsung has already produced a prototype of a TV-size display made with nanotubes. Televisions based on the (FED) screens will make their way onto shelves in sometime in 2006.
