DirecTV Rate Hikes

January 28, 2005

Directv_7I’m sure the announcement of Dishnetwork purchasing Voom’s hardware couldn’t possibly have had anything to do with the timing of this announcement, nah. All joking aside DirecTV announced a rate hike recently, come March 1st overall rates will go up by around 4% for current DirecTV customers.

The “Total Choice” package will go up by 5% to $41.99, while the “Total Choice Plus,” package goes up 7% to $45.99, and “Total Choice Premiere,” which includes the major premium movie channels, will rise 3.3% to $93.99.

In all fairness DirecTV is about to roll out one of the most ambitious hardware up-grades in satellite TV history, and does deserve a fair market compensation for these upgrades. Beginning in the second half of 2005, DirecTV will begin switching out current MPEG-2 hardware with MPEG-4 capable satellite receivers. DirecTV aims to target HDTV customers first, subsidizing much if not all of the switch over cost, with non HD customers being upgraded later on into 2005 and possibly into 2006.

Does anyone have a guess as to when some hardware might be available for this?
