InFocus announces the X3

May 4, 2005

X3Recognize the case? It’s the same housing used in the X1, X2, SP4800, and SP4805 but what’s different about the recently announced X3 from InFocus is the resolution. The X3 marks the first time an X/48 series from InFocus has crossed the 854×480 pixel mark.

The X3 boasts some impressive specifications considering the $1,199 street price. Some of those features include: Texas Instruments DarkChip2 DMD, a native resolution of 1024×768 pixels, 1600 ANSI lumens, and a 2000:1 contrast ratio.

The only downside to the X3, relatively speaking, is its 4:3 native, aspect ratio. While not ideal for Home Theater viewing, this would make a nice projector for those who do a lot of large screen PC gaming and the casual TV viewer.

All of this raises one question, if InFocus can deliver resolutions this high in the X1/4800 chassis, could a re-worked SP4805 be in the wings? Or even the long overdue replacement for the SP5700? If I had to guess I’d say such a projector will likely show up sometime towards the end of summer, keep an eye out.
