Free DVR’s for DirecTV subscribers follow up

June 21, 2005

Directv_7The no such thing as a free lunch rule is still in full effect over at DirecTV, not that it should come as a surprise, but the details are interesting nonetheless. As it turns out these “free” DVR’s may indeed be free for new subscribers but current subscribers will most likely have to pay a small upfront fee. I have absolutely zero problem with that and I wouldn’t expect anything else in all honesty, but the ugly part of the “deal” however is a deal breaker for me.

How does a two year commitment for your “free” DVR strike you? While I’ll agree that technically it isn’t that bad of a deal, I just personally loathe service contracts of any kind. Yeah they are giving you a DVR (maybe even a HD-DVR) that alone might retail for 800 to 900 dollars, but at wholesale the real upfront cost to DirecTV is much less than that, how much do you think they’ll make off the average subscriber in that timeframe? And what if another service launches a better package or equipment deal while you’re still under contract?

Again if a two year contract doesn’t scare you off, by all means this is one heck of a deal, but too lengthy for my tastes. We received some info from DirecTV a few days ago with some of the terms of the promotion which starts in early August. The terms allow for a free DVR for new customers who are willing to commit to certain channel packages and the aforementioned two year contract. I didn’t see any language in the fax that indicated existing customers couldn’t receive a similar deal, but I think a lot of this is still being hashed out.

  • Have you heard anymore on this at all? I can’t find information on google regarding Free HD-DVR from DTV.

I’ve been seriously considering going back to Comcast, though I would miss the NFL Sunday Tickey (but not the $200 they are charging me for it).
