HDCP already irrelevant, AACS next

July 19, 2005

pirateIn the coming months you’ll hear increasing talk about AACS (Advanced Access Content System) the new copy protection scheme (reportedly) used by both HD-DVD and Blu-ray, that’s designed to limit or prohibit making copies of the “near masters”. But the studios are wasting their time even bothering (in my opinion) and I’ll tell you why.

As long as one cent of profit can be gained from the reproduction of high quality source material, someone will toil away at cracking AACS, as was recently accomplished with the equally “secure” HDCP protection scheme. That’s right HDCP the handshaking protocol used by many of today’s high definition sources and displays has already been compromised; most notably by the “DVIHDCP” manufactured and sold by the German manufacturer Spatz.

To date the data pirates have circumvented every copy protection method devised for consumer electronics media, and I see no reason why the same won’t happen to AACS. There’s one thing however that will, in almost every circumstance by-pass the demand for pirated software, music, and movies; affordable prices.

Several years ago DVD’s saw an across the board price cut in the neighborhood of 25-40%. A funny thing happened after the price cut; people started buying DVD’s in larger numbers. Weird how that works out, huh? I’d like to think the same logic will be applied to high definition DVD’s, however given their resolution and the possibility of perfect digital copies flooding the market, this isn’t very likely.

How can I purchase a SPATZ HDTVX (ie the “DVIHDCP” manufactured and sold by Spatz)? I checked out the SPATZ web site but could not find order info for a US order. I’m interested in checking a component for cracking HDCP. Anyway to purchase in US? Thanks.
