DirecTV to add new HD channel

August 29, 2005

Directv_7DirecTV’s addition of ESPN2 HD (Sept 9th) really doesn’t make the service any more or less attractive to me, as I likely wouldn’t ever watch the channel if I had it, but hopefully this is just one of several new HD channels to come.

The article from TV Week also mentions the HD local’s roll-out and that the new MPEG-4 receivers might be had for as little as $250.00. I for one say about time they get more aggressive with HD cable, which has in my opinion been kicking their proverbial butt for some time now.

You're going to see more an more deals like this as the satellite competition heats up between DirecTV and Dishnetwork. Prices may not go lower, but packages and programming will continue to grow. Just look at what happened with local channels programming. Thanks for the forum to post our opinions.

WOW 1 new HD channel for 2005. DirecTV really needs to step up. The delays in launching new satellites and broken promises of new channels in spring of 2005 really open the doors for cable companies and Verizon (fiber optic) to swoop up dissatisfied customers. I live in NY and have DirecTV with HD. Its ok, but having to have an OTA to receive HD channel 11, UPN9 and PBS makes me wonder what Direct is doing. They should be carrying all available HD in the area, not select ‘local’ channels. Also DirecTV has made no mention of HD TNT or weather they will carry the Voom line up (its not exclusive to one dish company). ESPN2 is a nice addition but 1 want more.
