PC magazine on the format war debacle
September 21, 2005
Tired of hearing about Blu-ray and HD-DVD yet? If not wait until the chatter turns into debate, and then to full fledged screaming. By then you should have had your fill of incompatible format pissing matches.
PC magazine writer Melissa J. Perenson recaps the up-to-now how’s and why’s of the format war quite nicely in this article, and also posts some emails from PC Magazine readers on the subject. The general synopsis of the emails is that if Sony or Toshiba are expecting good first year sales of HD DVD players (which I doubt they are) they might want to think again.

Microsoft endorses Toshiba’s hd-dvd format because it allows the uset to make a legal copy on the hard disk and use in in any device in the home. Nice for a $10 dvd, but not so for a $200 operating system like XP. So goes Microsoft.
