Blu-ray propaganda

Blu-rayFirstly don’t take any of this as a condemnation of Blu-ray, just some observations on how press releases can be potentially misleading. A few days ago I received a press release stating “MGM to Support Blu-ray Disc Format” I thought to myself ok…where is the news here? Of course MGM will support Blu-ray; Sony bought MGM over a year ago.

These “hype releases” always give me a chuckle, as they are rarely read by the very consumers they target, and the news sources who validate them often just regurgitate the text as “news”. I’d liken this type of press release to general Motors stating that Chevy was number one!

Now in MGM’s defense they do state that:

“MGM is owned by an investor consortium comprised of Providence Equity Partners, Texas Pacific Group, Sony Corporation of America, Comcast Corporation, DLJ Merchant Banking Partners and Quadrangle Group.”

But the above snippet of text comes after:

“Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. is an independent, privately-held motion picture, television, home video, and theatrical production and distribution company.”

I understand the distinction between the two statements, but would someone who was just giving the release a fast glance catch it? In the end it’s the consumer that will decide which format they want, and with all the uncertainty surrounding both Blu-ray and HD-DVD, it’s a little early too get overly hyped on either side, in my opinion.
