LG to the rescue?

March 15, 2006

LGRumors of dual format HD-DVD/Blu-ray players have been bounced around for the better part of the last year, and for the most part they’ve remained just that rumors. However LG appears to be readying a dual format player. According to a Reuters story dated March 14th, LG Electronics says it’s considering a dual format HD-DVD/Blu-ray player for launch later this year.

Obviously a dual format player would cost more than either of the respective formats stand alone players. But as I’ve stated several times before, the real cost in any DVD collection is the media itself, not the player. And with HD-DVD and Blu-ray titles coming in at over $30 in some cases, this is more true than ever.

Of course this isn’t as good as both sides coming to an agreement and releasing just one format, but any possibility of that has long since passed. So once again I’m left with the stark realization that my best option may be to just wait out the entire format war or risk being stuck with a pile of worthless hi-def DVD’s. Something to ponder during another of my all too frequent insomnia attacks.
