Athena Micro 6 mini-review

April 11, 2006

Athena Micro 6Earlier this month we explored a certain cube-satellite system that rhymes with hose and I mentioned that you really should audition as many of these sat/cube systems as possible before purchasing one. One speaker system that surely deserves a place in that must audition category is the athena TECHNOLOGIES Micra 6.

All of the speakers in the Micra 6 system are magnetically shielded and the satellite drivers consist of one ½” dome tweeter and one 3 1/2″ polypropylene cone with rubber surrounds, making them much more desirable than the paper cones found in other satellite speakers.

The center channel houses two of the bass/mid drivers found in the satellites and the same dome tweeter found in the sats. The subwoofers 8” driver is powered by an internal 225 watt amplifier.

Various quotes from [Home Theater Magazines] May 2004 review of the Micra 6 System:

“Not once, though, did I hesitate to give the Micra 6 system some juice. You don’t have to tiptoe around this system.”

“Even through the tiny Micra 6 system, there’s a surprising sense of space and ease.”

“This is a dynamic little powerhouse of a surround system.”

Obviously no satellite system can recreate the full-range impact of a large floor standing speaker paired with a large subwoofer, but if your looking for something that doesn’t scream out ‘hey look over here I’m a big speaker’ then the Micra 6 system is well worth a listen.

I also wish they could be purchased separately as I’m not a fan of buying all pieces together.

Glad these guys are getting some press…. I own a set of these & I have to say for a smaller room these speakers provide a great experience. For the price, I had trouble finding anything else that could compete. I only wish you could buy the sub seperately as I would love to add an additional one to my set-up.:o) Also, the stands are a little hard to find and pricey ($60/pair plus shipping)
