Countdown to HD-DVD’s launch

April 17, 2006

Riddick on HD-DVDThe official launch of HD-DVD here in the states is less than 24 hours away, although Best Buy and a few other large retailers have already started to sell the players. The HD-DVD titles however are another story. Most retailers seem to be holding firm on the Tuesday April 18th street date before they’ll sell the first handful of announced discs.

I caught a quick snippet about HD-DVD on NPR this morning nothing shocking or profound, just a quick recap and mention of the impending format war. I suppose tomorrow we’ll see a few anchors mentioning HD-DVD on the cable networks, but I doubt they’ll present it as the beginning of a format-war that has the potential to drag on for years.

Another semi-interesting bit of news is that Blockbuster has finally decided to rent HD-DVD and Blu-ray titles, hats off to Netflix for having enough insight to announce their support for hi-def DVD back in January.

I’ve heard tomorrow’s official release of HD-DVD players and titles described as a “soft-launch”, which is a pretty accurate description considering that only three titles will be available at launch, although Universal is preparing their HD-DVD titles. I have to say I find some of these Universal titles (Chronicles of Riddick, Van Helsing, Jarhead, and Cinderella Man) much more interesting than Warner Bros initial releases.

I can only imagine what tomorrow would have been like for home theater aficionados if format unification would have gone forward and we were looking at one player with twice the amount of titles.

Still have to buy one first. Yesterday I looked online and the BestBuy that’s about 4 blocks from me had one HD-A1 left, I hesitated and now it’s gone.

Now In order to get one I have to drive quite a bit farther, we’ll see.

Are you going to give us a review of some sort of the HD-DVDs and how it looks or sounds?

    Thanks
