This makes more sense to me rather than a peripheral device. They could sell two different models.

Would it be that hard for MS to swap the current drive with one that reads HD-DVD and put an HDMI out on it? If the cost of the add-on is $200 or even better $100 many people will be willing to give it a chance. I am very excited about HD content on my 106" 720p screen, however I am not super excited about a first gen $500 player that is potentially not feature complete. The plus with the 360 is will most likely be a software solution on the 360 with the hardware simply being a drive and possibly output. That way it can be upgraded to add and interactive functions that might not have have been totally baked into the first gen players.

The big plus I think is a lowering of the barrier to entry.
