Format Wars: Ricoh to the Rescue?

July 7, 2006

RicohDual format Blu-ray/HD DVD players may have just gotten a little more likely and cheaper to produce, in one fell swoop. According to Forbes (by way of Nihon Keizai Shimbun) Ricoh has developed a way of reading both Blu-ray and HD DVD disc’s with the same laser.

While other companies (LG and Samsung) have hinted at dual format players, those designs (in theory) required the use of two separate laser assemblies. Ricoh’s solution would appear to offer a less expensive alterative to the dual-pickup method.

Nihon Keizai Shimbun’s (Nikkei Net) unidentified source indicated “Ricoh was aiming to commercialize this technology as soon as the end of next year.”

While obviously not fast enough to save weary HD disc buyers from potentially purchasing the wrong format, this is still quite an interesting development. Ricoh’s dual format solution may very well wind up in players that appear toward last days of the format war, insulating consumers who bought into both formats.
