Sony Pearl (VPL-VW50) Projector Confirmed

August 7, 2006

Sony pearl ProjectorSo now we have a model number, some specifications and even a rough street date of October for release. Now all we need is a firm retail price and Sony can claim the distinction of offering the lowest priced (estimated around 6k) 1080p front projector on the market.

About those specifications, it looks like the Pearl will include: Full 1920×1080 resolution, 5000:1 contrast ratio, 200 watt lamp, 900 lumens, manual horizontal and vertical lens shift and 2 HDMI inputs.

I can’t make out enough of the translated (leaked) press release but it does appear as if some form of auto-iris will be used. Of course once more of the details are confirmed we’ll update accordingly.

–Update 10/08/06 -– AV Buzz has a few more images of the VPL-VW50 and a screen shot gallery on-line. Still no concrete retail numbers for the U.S but we’ll keep you posted.

The VPL-VW100 was absolutely amazing for home cinemas. SXRD chips create extremely good-looking images. It’s a shame there aren’t more details and pictures being released on this projector, but I suspect that it’s going to make a huge splash into the home theater market.

I’d love to have one of the new 1080P DLP projectors (I’m a big fan of DLP), but with this much of a price advantage for an SXRD Sony, there is just no way I’d pick DLP. I can’t imagine any 1080P DLP having a performance advantage worth $6000+.

Interesting Brad and Jay, I was thinking MSRP=5995, MAP=5495

Your numbers come from official Sony dealer pricing? Bit of a conflict between them, rounded off perhaps?
