Xbox 360 HD DVD Add-On Details

September 27, 2006

Xbox HD DVDWe finally know the asking price for the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, the drive will retail for $199 when it launches in the states in mid-November. Also as announced in Japan the 360 HD DVD add-on will include an Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote

And as speculated here, the 360 add-on will also include (for a limited time) a little movie you may have heard of, Peter Jackson’s ‘King Kong’. Seems like a reasonable price for HD DVD playback, a remote and a major movie. Thoughts?

I knew it was going to $199 and not $175. :)
Where do I pre-order? Throwing Kong in as a bundle sounds pretty sweet.

$199 is pretty much my price range, and I was going to pick up that movie anyway, so that’s a plus. Can’t wait.

This news pushes me very close to adopting HD-DVD. I’ll just wait for user reports before committing.

BTW, I was on the BD bandwagon early on because of the spec sheet (I wonder how many BD readers you still have), but changed my mind after seeing both in person - arguably the most important test for this kind of product. So, knowing the current realities of both platforms, I’m hoping we can declare a winner soon and be done with it.

Am I still an early adopter if I buy before the end of the year? Anybody know whether the official cut off date has passed? :-)

Any word if they are going to add a HDMI output - perhaps a dongle or something? They epect us to use component? Sheesh!

You’d be surprised at how relatively little complaints I’ve gotten, most have come in the form of “wth the PS3 is l33t and will wtfpwn HD DVD!”

Corey, I think given the add-on’s relatively low cost, component isn’t all that big of a shortcoming.

is it region free drive? can we in the uk buy r1 hd dvds and play them? can i buy a us drive and use it with my pal uk machine?

Kidou, it’s my understanding the drives are indeed region free but if HD DVD region coding was implemented, it could be added by way of a patch to the console itself. I stress could, HD DVD still doesn’t have region coding as of this date.
