CEATEC 2006 Preview

October 2, 2006

CEATEC 2006Don’t you just love consumer electronics’ trade shows? Where else can we get a sneak peak at the latest and greatest equipment, equipment that will send our credit-cards into a state of shock a few weeks later. It seems like we just wrapped up IFA and CEDIA and now we’re looking forward to tomorrow’s CEATEC 2006, opening festivities in Chiba Japan. Before we know it CES will roll around like clockwork.

CEATEC in previous years gave us our first glimpse of products like Sharp’s 65” LCD and Sony’s VPL-HS50, this year the show will continue to focus on display technologies with a rumored showing from Toshiba and their S.E.D display technology. S.E.D wasn’t prominently displayed at the recent IFA but it’s expected this year’s CEATEC may give us a more in-depth introduction into the displays capabilities.

Also rumored is a “new Sony Blu-ray disc product” no further information was given but if I had to speculate, I’d say keep an eye out for a new Blu-ray recorder or a second stand-alone player. CEATEC expects upwards of 200k visitors to the show and the number of exhibitors has increased from 788 to 807 for this years show.

Speaking of Toshiba and high definition disc technologies, I managed to get my hands on an early copy of ‘Batman Begins’ on HD DVD, read the full review here.
