CEATEC Day 2: Holy Contrast Batman

October 4, 2006

CEATEC 2006Not much of an update from CEATEC today but I did want to point out one rather impressive bit of technology. Sharp demonstrated their 37” “Mega Contrast” LCD next to a conventional LCD panel. As you can see [even in the photograph] the display on the left produces a much deeper black level.

Sharp Mega Contrast Display

Here’s the kicker, the Sharp “Mega Contrast” sports a 1 million-to-1 contrast ratio. This is obviously light years ahead of current contrast ratios and should make for some jaw dropping images if/when the technology makes it way to conventional displays. I’m told those who viewed the demonstration first hand were able to make out stars in the background, the display on the right was incapable of rendering.
