Format Wars: Even the Executives are Confused

November 13, 2006

Blu-ray & HD DVDIt’s no wonder consumers are confused about the next-generation optical disc formats, it appears as if executives in charge of overseeing the production of next-gen video titles are as well.

In a recent interview Peter Chernin (President and COO of News Corporation – Fox’s parent company) stated “Most of the HD-DVD players are at the $1,000 range and you’re going to see a huge number of Blu-ray players entering the marketplace through PlayStation 3.”

Quick someone inform Mr. Chernin the MSRP of Toshiba’s HD-A1 and HD-A2 is $499 and not 1k. Ok all kidding aside I assume Chernin was generalizing, or at least I hope he was. I do find it interesting however that Mr. Chernin went on to state “I don’t think there’s likely to be a quick resolution, I think the resolution, if it comes, is likely to be driven by the marketplace.”

The tone of those comments seems to differ significantly from Fox’s Senior VP of marketing communications; Steve Feldstein, who declared “PlayStation is by far the dominant game platform, and this should put questions about format wars to rest.” Perhaps some inter-company memos are in order here, it seems as if Fox is more bullish on Blu-ray than the head office.
