Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 – 1080p Plasma

November 26, 2006

Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1Friday afternoon we setup our Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 demo model, (we recently picked up the Elite line) the PRO-FHD1 is the world’s first* 50” 1080p plasma and by all accounts the display appears to exceed the hype surrounding it. This is by no means a full review, although one is forthcoming but I did want to give some initial impressions of the display.

First off the PRO-FHD1 (retail 8k) is a knockout in the styling department; overall the gloss-black Elite design hasn’t changed much but the smoked glass bezel around the front of the display extends out about half an inch from the case, which makes for a very high-tech/stylish look. Another change and a welcome one at least as far as we’re concerned, is Pioneer’s omission of the separate A/V – media input box, all input cables now interface directly into the panel.

Superfluous details aside the image quality was no letdown either, unfortunately we didn’t even have time to route a HD source to the display, but we did temporarily hook-up a Denon DVD-3930ci. Out of the box, un-calibrated and stone cold the display looked fantastic. The pixel structure was tiny and razor-sharp, and the colors (even with SD DVD) were saturated and convincing. From a few feet back; the look was nearly reminiscent of a high quality CRT display.

I hope to have a full review of the PRO-FHD1 ready before the end of the year, give or take a few weeks. We’re swamped but its definitely on the to-do list.(* to my knowledge)

This was an awesome set… The kuro line improved on it quite a bit. It is unfortunate that Pioneer has decided to leave the market. What will high end customers do?
