The Day After
December 26, 2006
Well it’s December 26th and undoubtedly many of you received new additions to your home theater systems yesterday. So what was it? a new HDTV, high definition DVD player, standard-def player, A/V receiver or even one of the next-generation gaming systems?
Have you had time to clear the wrapping paper away and install it yet? inquiring minds want to know. No new additions to my system as yet; anyone who asked about my wish list either gave me a blank stare or let out a boisterous laugh. I can’t blame them really; after all new HDMI receivers and 1080p projectors aren’t exactly casual gifts.

Hi,
I am interested in spending around $500 for a surround sound system for my home. I have a TV and DVD player. I need a receiver and speakers and ???. What can I buy as a set for this amount of money? Anything decent?
Thanks!
Jack
Hi, Just got a 40″ Sony Bravia and where I want to mount it has a 19″ center to center stud spacing. ARG! I need a mount that has an articulating arm. All the ones I have seen so far have been for 16″ stud spacing. The Bravia is only 50lb without the stand, do I need 2 studs or will one do? Any information will be helpfull to make this a good new year project.
The quickest solution is mount a 19″ board to the studs and mount the mount to the board spanning the two joists.
For a better looking solution, put a support stud between the studs and re-sheet rock.
As far as AV equipment, I was hoping for a Denon 2930ci but it will have to wait for the new year. Upgraded the marine aquarium instead.
Jack, I would suggest getting a Pioneer VSX-816 receiver and a pair of Mirage Nanosats. Thats right around the $500 mark. Then, add three more Nanosats and a subwoofer as you can afford to do so. They’ll blow away any single box system.
As for me, my holiday gifts to myself include a new PS Audio Quintessence power line conditioner, Audioquest Cheetah interconnects, and Audio Magic Trinium XL power cords.
