JVC DLA-HD1 1080p Front Projector

January 27, 2007

JVC DLA-HD1I wanted to catch up on some CES news that was just too important to let slip by. JVC’s much lauded DLA-HD10K and DLA-HD2K projectors aren’t alone in JVC’s D-ILA stable any longer. I’m sure by now many of you have heard about JVC’s DLA-HD1 1920×1080 projector but for those of you who may have missed it, here’s a quick recap.

The DLA-HD1 (1080p) sports a contrast ratio of 15,000:1, ±80% vertical and ±34% horizontal lens shift, 2x zoom lens,1080p/24 compatibility and Gennum’s GF9351 video processor, but just as important as the HD1’s list of notable specifications is its suggested retail price. The DLA-HD1 lists for $6299 which places it slightly north of Sony’s well received VPL-VW50 (Pearl) but decidedly south of the 10K plus 1080p DLP’s announced at the show.

The good news here for front projection fans is that quality, affordable 1080p projectors are drawing ever closer. It may be six months to a year before 1080p projectors reach the price points occupied by current mid-range 720p units, but products like the DLA-HD1 are an important stepping stone toward that eventuality. The DLA-HD1 is expected to ship in February.

Since my wife and I are extremely sensitive to single chip DLP rainbows and headaches, it is encouraging to see more affordable 3 chip solutions like the DLA HD1.
