First Generation HD DVD Firmware Update

April 27, 2007

Toshiba HD-XA1It’s been quite a while since I’ve mentioned a Toshiba HD DVD firmware update here but this one is well worth a few lines. Firmware update 2.2 (released today) “adds support for certain anticipated network delivered content in future HD DVD discs, improves certain video and audio processing capabilities, as well as addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related problems identified by Toshiba.”

While not specifically mentioned in the official update notes I noticed something else in 2.2 that was certainly an improvement over prior firmware updates. According to my notes from a few months ago I was getting a tray-close to video on-screen load time of about 1:10, after updating to 2.2 I was averaging about 56 seconds for the same disc load. In addition the overall boot-up process was a bit faster as well.

It’s nice to see Toshiba looking after the early adopters as well as those who just picked up a second generation player. If you’re still running 1.xx firmware; go ahead and update your player via Ethernet or if you filled out the warranty card and checked the option to receive updates directly from Toshiba, you should receive your disc in the mail in a few weeks. Happy viewing.
