Show-off Your Bad Home Theater, Win a New One

Bad Home TheaterA reader was kind enough to forward along a link to “Make Shifters”; yeah I wondered the exact same thing, what’s that? In a nutshell D&M Holdings (Parent company to Denon, Marantz etc.) and Circuit City have teamed up to give away a “home theater makeover”. Not sure I like the word makeover associated with home theater but that’s another story altogether… Anyway they’re giving away a “makeover” to the top three worst theaters. Entries can be in video or photo form and judging from some of the existing entries, we’ve got our work cut out for us; love the “picture on picture” entry. The deadline for entries is July 20th.

The prizes include a full Denon, Boston Acoustics, Lay-Z-Boy home theater system for first place; a Lay-Z-Boy recliner, Boston Acoustics/Denon surround system and media (CD/DVD) gift certificate package for second, and a grab bag of individual components for third place. Some of the entries so far are really over the top (I smell ringers), but others seem really down to earth and genuinely in need of some serious upgrades, head on over and check it out. At the very least some of them are good for a chuckle. Thanks for the tip Gob.

    Lord, looking at the entries - it's obvious that none of us here have a shot in hell at winning this contest. It astonishes me how some people will be willing to live with some of their ludicrously poor set-ups. If anyone wants to see more funny/crazy stuff like this just do a search on any of the major forums (IGN/Gamespot/AVS/etc) for threads dedicated only to people showing off pics of their PS3 and Xbox 360 "home theater" rigs. One I saw that made me laugh was a guy who was playing his 360 off a small CRT that sat balanced loosely on top of an old bicycle in his basement. You see others who have every single videogame system out there but a set from the stone age. 6 consoles including all 3 next-gen systems sitting next to and directly hooked up to a 17 inch POS. LOL! It's unbelieveable.

    Shame about this contest for me though, I have a solid home theater (so I'll be ineligible) - however, everything else about the room looks like unattractive crap. I really need a Lazy Boy, etc that would make the seating comfortable. My wife forced me to move all my entertainment stuff into a cramped room where I currently only have an old mattress to watch things from. You try to sit up or look up from it awkwardly and its goofy as hell. I definitely look forward to when I can re-arrange things with a nice chair so I won't be too exhausted and uncomfortable to use my rig when I come home from work, like I am now...(hah, cue the violin, right?)

    I can't believe you guys missed the fact that CC will give a $10 gc to everyone that posts a video/photo of their system. I have a decent system so I don't think I'll win the big prize but I submitted a photo of my system and hope to get the $10 gc.

    hahaha I like it! It really is crazy to see what some people have to resort to. Puts stuff in perspective for us. This may even make debates over expensive HDMI cables seem excessive! (jk... don't worry I have not lost my mind)
