Eye on Netflix

November 2, 2007

NetflixThings have been pretty hectic around here lately (read that it’s fall) but I wanted to back up to something that made news last week and something I referenced back in January. By now, some of you have had a chance to try out Netflix’s “Watch It Now” service, which in essence amounts to movies in your web browser.

Flashback to last week and we see Reed Hastings himself (CEO of Netflix) pontificating the idea of Netflix rentals on “internet connected game consoles.” Without patting myself on the back too much, that’s pretty much what we surmised when Hastings was appointed to Microsoft’s board of directors back in January. Now whether this Xbox360 as a video store concept will take off is another story altogether.

There are several things that would have to fall into place before the idea would really gain traction. Number one, I don’t see browser flicks with the “watch it now” level of image quality working here. They’re going to have higher bitrate encodes for the 42” and larger displays many Xbox’s are connected to.

Secondly they can’t charge $4, $5, or more a pop for these rentals. Once you cross the level of retail brick & mortar rental fees you’re going to bang your ahead against that wall continuously. No, these “rentals” really need to be back in the $2 to $3 range for catalog titles and possibly slightly more for new releases. Speaking of movies; particularly high definition movies, were any of you guys successful in the Walmart HD DVD player for $99 lottery today?

Yes, I got a $99 walmart A2 last Friday. It was for my wife’s office TV at home. The HT area uses the xbox 360 HD DVD drive. Would love to see more titles for download on xbox live, with cheaper prices and higher quality.

Yup, I scored one to put in the bedroom. Already had an A2 for the living room. I also picked up a few (6) of the $15 movies. Now, if we can get a “Secret Sale” on a Blue Ray player…

I’m helping a friend’s wife buy him a secret home theater for his birthday, and she was able to snag an A2 this morning at Wal-Mart.
