Format Wars: A Different Perspective

August 1, 2006

You know where I stand on Blu-ray and HD DVD, we can even see what other consumers have to say in the format war but there’s another group that needs to be heard from as well. The manufacturers and retailers of both HD DVD and Blu-ray offer their own views on the format war in […]

Format Wars: Fox Bullish On DVD and Blu-ray

July 28, 2006

Fox Home Entertainment’s Worldwide President, Mike Dunn recently spoke with Home Media Retailing on a variety of entertainment mediums but of course his comments on Blu-ray were what I found most interesting. The in-depth interview by HMR’s Erik Gruenwedel starts out with questions on the maturing DVD industry, Fox’s 2006 theatrical releases, digital downloads and […]

Netflix CEO: Format War a Stalemate

July 25, 2006

I want to thank Davis Freeburg over at for not only making a legitimate case for boycott’s in the format war but for one hell of great take on Reed Hastings (CEO of Netflix) comments on the format war. During yesterday’s Q2 2006 earnings conference call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said: “Our view is […]

Format Wars: Boycotts Aren’t the Answer

July 21, 2006

I nearly titled this post ‘Boycott PC Magazine’ but figured that might have been a little over reactionary. However when a publication that claims to be “The Independent Guide to Technology” calls for the boycott of both Blu-ray and HD DVD I have to wonder, exactly who do they expect to develop new technologies? I […]

Disney, Fox, DIVX and Blu-ray

July 19, 2006

Before I even get started, I want to be perfectly clear that my intention here isn’t to draw performance parallels between DIVX and the Blu-ray, as humorous as that might be it wouldn’t be fair or accurate. What I am interested in are the (ostensibly) eerie similarities in how the Blu-ray Disc Association pitched their […]

Joe Kane on Blu-ray

July 14, 2006

The name Joe Kane is either (1) synonymous with video quality to you, or (2) completely foreign. If you fall into the later category, Joe Kane is the man behind ‘A Video Standard’, ‘Video Essentials’ and ‘Digital Video Essentials’, some of the most widely accepted and referenced video calibration software titles ever released. Mr. Kane […]

Format Wars: Ricoh to the Rescue?

July 7, 2006

Dual format Blu-ray/HD DVD players may have just gotten a little more likely and cheaper to produce, in one fell swoop. According to Forbes (by way of Nihon Keizai Shimbun) Ricoh has developed a way of reading both Blu-ray and HD DVD disc’s with the same laser. While other companies (LG and Samsung) have hinted […]

Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD Fact vs. Fiction

June 28, 2006

Alright yesterdays post got me a bit fired up, I think it’s time we clear up some myths surrounding the supposed technical superiority of Blu-ray over HD-DVD. Immediately after the initial announcements of Blu-ray and HD-DVD back in 2002, the Blu-ray camp began floating the idea their format was technically superior to HD-DVD. Well, as […]

Format Wars: Viva la Spin

June 27, 2006

You know, the whole format war thing is a boon for tech writers; Anne Rice couldn’t invent this kind of fiction. I have to say as unfortunate as the whole sorted mess is, it sure makes for great post fodder. For example, just one week after Sony 4th quarter of this year’ and ‘Blu-ray player […]

Panasonic’s DMP-BD10 and the Format War Thus Far

June 23, 2006

Thursday Panasonic unveiled their finalized Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD10. Panasonic’s Blu-ray player includes 1080p playback of both Blu-ray and SD-DVD’s (up-conversion) as well as their proprietary P4HD image processing technology. Oh the DMP-BD10 has one other important feature: CD playback. Something to consider versus Sony’s BDP-S1, The Panasonic DMP-BD10 is scheduled for release in September. […]
